You Should Still Check Your Mirrors even with a Backup Camera

Summary:

A backup camera is valuable safety tools that enhance rear visibility and help reduce low-speed collisions, especially in driveways and parking lots. However, experts emphasize that they should complement—not replace—rearview mirrors and traditional safety practices like turning your head and checking surroundings manually.

A backup camera, usually mounted at the back of the vehicle, projects a live image to a dashboard or mirror display. It helps detect small children, pets, and low-lying objects that rearview mirrors might miss. Certified driving instructor Steven Norman states that backup cameras offer clearer views of what’s directly behind the car, reducing blind spots. Still, they are not foolproof and should never be solely relied upon when reversing.

Not every vehicle has a backup camera. Cars built before May 2018 might not include them, although many automakers adopted them early. Since May 1, 2018, U.S. law mandates all new vehicles under 10,000 pounds be equipped with backup cameras as standard.

Insurance expert Erika Tortorici and attorney William Pemberton agree that while backup cameras increase safety, they do not generally qualify for insurance discounts. However, maintaining a safe driving record—helped by using such safety tools—can positively affect premiums over time.

Backup cameras come with pros, such as easier parking, reduced risk to pedestrians, and better trailer hitch alignment. Yet, they also have cons: limited viewing angles, vulnerability to dirt or damage, potential malfunctions, and the risk of overreliance. They also don’t perform well in poor lighting or extreme weather.

Ultimately, safety experts recommend using backup cameras alongside mirrors and head checks for maximum situational awareness. Doing so helps avoid accidents and ensures a more comprehensive understanding of the surroundings when backing up.
