The Reasons People Are Naming Cars

Summary:

Naming cars is a practice rooted in both practicality and emotional depth, reflecting our desire to connect even with machines that carry us through life. When I began in car sales in 1990, I was advised by seasoned veterans to avoid trading cars with names, believing it indicated a deep attachment that would make the transaction difficult. This advice piqued my curiosity and led me to explore why people name their vehicles.

Naming a car is akin to naming a horse, suggesting a blend of companionship, reliance, and shared experiences. Cars, integral to our daily lives and adventures, become witnesses to milestones and secrets. This fosters a unique bond, transforming them from mere vehicles into trusted companions.

Instead of viewing named cars as a hurdle, I saw it as a chance to connect with clients. In discussions about trade-ins, I would ask, “Is it a he or a she, and does it have a name?”. This question often disarmed clients, creating a friendly atmosphere and making them feel understood. Sharing stories about their cars helped in guiding them towards making a decision to trade.

When it was time for clients to choose a new vehicle, I’d gently ask if they had picked out a name for their new car. Thus recognizing their readiness for new adventures. This approach not only eased transactions but highlighted the human tendency to form emotional attachments to inanimate objects.

Through my career, I’ve named three significant vehicles: a 1989 Dodge D150 Regular Cab named Buddy. A 2005 Ford Excursion Diesel known as Truck Norris, and a 2012 Chevy Silverado Z71 called Truck Taylor. Naming these cars acknowledged their roles in my life’s story, and I remain curious about others’ experiences with naming their vehicles.
