The Rarest American Of The Sports Cars

Summary:

Sports cars have always fascinated enthusiasts, especially classic models that offer a pure driving experience beyond what modern cars can replicate. While many new sports cars are available in 2024, including those with manual transmissions, classic models remain highly coveted for their exclusivity and unique driving sensations.

One particularly rare and desirable classic American sports car is the 1966 Shelby Cobra Super Snake. This vehicle stands out for its extraordinary features and scarcity. Built around a competition-spec 427 Cobra, the Super Snake boasts twin Paxton superchargers that boost its power from 550 to 800 horsepower. It also includes a larger hood scoop, wider wheel arches, and a bigger grille to handle the increased power and cooling needs. Only two Super Snakes were made—one for Shelby himself and one for comedian Bill Cosby.

The Super Snake’s rarity is amplified by the fact that only one of these cars remains today. The second Super Snake, given to Cosby, was sold and later destroyed in a tragic accident. The remaining Super Snake, Shelby’s personal car, is a highly prized collectible, fetching over $5 million at auction. In March 2021, it was sold for $5.5 million through Barrett-Jackson auctions, demonstrating its immense value and desirability.

For collectors who cannot acquire the original, replica and continuation models of the Cobra 427 are available. While these replicas are more affordable, often around $50,000. They do not match the original Super Snake’s extreme performance and historic value. Nonetheless, they offer enthusiasts a chance to own a piece of Shelby’s legendary legacy.
