How to Prepare Now for a Flat Tire

Summary:
Preparing for a Flat Tire

If you find yourself with a flat tire, your first instinct might be to use your spare tire or call for help. However, many newer cars don’t come with a spare tire, as manufacturers aim to improve fuel efficiency and reduce costs. In fact, Consumer Reports notes that about 40% of cars sold today lack any spare tire, including temporary ones, and some even lack the tools needed for flat repair.

Learn to Use an Emergency Repair Kit

Many cars without spares come equipped with emergency repair kits, which often include tire sealant and CO2 cartridges. Familiarize yourself with these tools and follow the instructions for applying sealant, which can be simpler than changing a tire. If you don’t have a repair kit, consider purchasing one, which may include sealant packets or a full repair kit. A portable air compressor is also useful for inflating sealed flats or low-pressure tires. Remember, these kits offer a temporary solution; you shouldn’t drive faster than 50 miles per hour or longer than 100 miles before having your tire inspected. Sealant is not effective for sidewall tears or severe damage, and its removal during repairs may incur extra costs.

Buy a Temporary Spare or Used Tire

If your car can accommodate a spare, consider buying a temporary spare or a refurbished full-size tire. Ensure it fits your vehicle’s spare wheel well. Also, keep the necessary tools, such as a jack and lug wrench, handy.

Check Roadside Assistance Benefits

Know how to access roadside assistance, which may be included with your vehicle’s warranty or auto insurance plan. If not, consider adding it to your insurance or joining AAA.
