Holographic Windshield Displays Coming In 2027

Summary:

Automakers are ramping up competition for advanced holographic windshield technology, with Cadillac showcasing a massive 55-inch display in the Escalade and Lincoln offering a 48-inch screen in the Navigator. However, many of these displays simply attach to the dashboard, lacking a cohesive design.

A promising change comes from Hyundai Mobis, which has partnered with optics specialist Zeiss to create a “holographic windshield display.” This cutting-edge technology transforms the windshield into a high-tech head-up display. Replacing the digital instrument cluster, infotainment system, and front passenger display. This holographic projection enables drivers to access multiple pieces of information without taking their eyes off the road.

Though it sounds like science fiction, Hyundai Mobis plans to start mass production of this technology by 2027. The display uses a high-tech projector and a transparent film that measures only 100 micrometers thick, about the size of a human hair. The company has already begun preliminary development and demonstrated the technology to domestic global automaker customers, likely Hyundai and Kia.

By tapping into the projected growth of the holographic head-up display market, expected to reach about 7 million units by 2030, Hyundai Mobis aims to attract new customers. This advancement could represent a significant evolution in automotive displays, creating more open and airy interiors.
