10 Things You Should Never Do While Pumping Gas

Summary:

Whether you refuel occasionally or frequently, safety should always be a priority at the gas pump. While static electricity-related incidents are rare, following these precautions can help prevent fires, spills, and other hazards.

  • Turn Off Your Engine – Always park your vehicle and turn off the engine before refueling. Also, switch off auxiliary power sources like phone chargers and cigarette lighters, as they could be potential ignition sources.
  • Stay Outside the Vehicle – Avoid getting back inside your car while refueling. Static electricity can build up and cause a spark when you touch metal, which could ignite gasoline vapors.
  • Avoid Cellphone Use – While cellphones are unlikely to ignite gas fumes, they can be a distraction. Staying alert ensures you follow safe fueling practices.
  • Don’t Overfill the Tank – Trust the pump’s automatic shut-off to prevent gasoline spills. Overfilling can damage your vehicle’s vapor recovery system and affect emissions control.
  • Handle Gas Spills Properly – If gasoline contacts your skin, wash with soap and lukewarm water. If it gets in your eyes, flush them with water for at least 15 minutes. If spilled on clothing, wash thoroughly before drying.
  • Keep Kids Inside the Car – While you should remain outside when refueling, children should stay inside to avoid fumes and distractions. Never leave them unattended.
  • Never Smoke – Avoid smoking, lighting matches, or using lighters anywhere near gas pumps. Fuel vapors are highly flammable.
  • Fire Safety Measures – If a fire occurs while refueling, back away immediately, leave the nozzle in place, and notify station staff. Do not attempt to remove the nozzle.
  • Use Approved Gas Containers – When filling a gas container, ensure it’s an approved, portable one. Keep it on the ground while filling, seal it tightly, and secure it in your vehicle to prevent spills.
  • Transport Gas Safely – Keep gas containers upright, away from direct sunlight, and never store them in a closed trunk. Gasoline vapors can build up, creating a fire hazard.
Protect Yourself from Skimming Devices

Be cautious of skimming devices at gas pumps. Inspect card readers, avoid using debit cards, and opt for tap-to-pay when possible to reduce the risk of fraud.
